When to Have a Cake? The Top 4 Occasions That Call for a Cake

Lifestyle and Entertainment

When you’re celebrating, no matter the occasion, certain key items are a must-have for bringing the party together and highlighting the celebrated person. And perhaps the most important of all is cake! Everyone loves a tasty cake, and a great one will be talked about even after the parties over.

From having a baby to retiring from your job, a cake is a fantastic way to say you appreciate someone. Cakes have a way of enhancing any form of party, getting everyone more comfortable and mingling around a tasty slice. Today we’re going to look at the top occasions to bust out a gorgeous cake.

Birthdays

Let’s start off with the most popular reason to celebrate with a cake, birthdays! Given that there are birthday cake traditions all over the world, and that we each have one every year, its safe to say birthday cakes are firmly at the top of the list for special occasions to have a cake.

Since most everyone in the world celebrates their birthday, there are many ways in which different places celebrate. One way that many people in The West are familiar with is the tradition of blowing out birthday candles.  This tradition started as a way to repel evil spirits on children’s birthdays, but has since evolved with the times. Today, in Australia at least, we sing Happy Birthday to the birthday person before they blow out their candles to make a wish (and they don’t tell a soul if they want it to come true).  While some families have variations on certain elements, the cake remains at the core of most birthday celebrations.

Weddings

Like birthdays, weddings have their own rituals and traditions. Having an elaborate wedding cake has grown to be much a part of a wedding as the first dance or best man’s speech.

There are multiple wedding traditions surrounding the wedding cake. The most prominent is the cutting of the cake. Most weddings feature this tradition, with the bride and groom cutting the cake together to symbolize their bond.

The modern day cake smash evolved from the different tradition of couples feeding a piece of cake to each other. While feeding cake to each other is still common place, the cake smash is growing more prominent. Instead of feeding each other, here the couple will squish a little piece of cake in each other’s face. This is a fun tradition symbolising the newlywed’s free spirits (and their lack of fear of the dry cleaner).

Another tradition is for the newlyweds to take the top tier of their cake home. They are to freeze it and eat it on their first anniversary or at their child’s christening. More modernised versions of this tradition see couples buying a new cake. While this may not be quite as symbolic as the traditional version, these couples at least get a much fresher piece of cake.

With reality shows dedicated to wedding cakes and making sure they are perfect for the big day, it is no surprise that they are normally large, tiered masterpieces that are the centrepiece of any wedding reception. A delicious wedding cake will be talked about for years after the wedding as well.

Anniversaries

Whether you’re celebrating a work, wedding, or friendship anniversary, the happy occasion can always be celebrated with cake. As mentioned, many couples will be eating cake on their first anniversary( either the slightly freezer-burnt cake from the wedding or a fresh one from the bakery). More than just marriage, anniversary celebrations come about for many different occasions. Whether celebrating your first year as a business, 10 years on the job or 30 years of friendship, happy occasions can always be celebrated with cake.

Baby Shower

Baby showers are typically thrown for expecting mothers by friends or family members when they are nearing their due dates. While traditionally the showers have been mostly female, today, co-op showers are becoming more popular so as to not leave the father, male best friends or family members out of all the fun (and cake!)

Baby shower cakes generally follow a theme (think baby animals) or are gendered in pink and blue. These tasty and adorable cake are the perfect centrepiece, bringing the theme together.

In recent years we’ve also seen the rise of the gender reveal. Where couples discover the sex of their child through an elaborate stunt, this may be part of the baby shower or a separate party entirely. While some people go to the extreme for these events, many more keep it more low-key. One popular option is for the expectant couple to cut into a cake to discover whether the inside is blue or pink.

These are just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many events and occasions that can be improved with a slice of cake. What other occasions can you think of that call for cake?
